Chapter 20

Whenever I Want You, All I Have to Do Is Scream

JO

Back home at the Sanctum, I tried to shake off the ick factor of the club and the unease about Heloise and the memory of those wide, insane eyes. You’re back on your own turf, Murphy. Relax. The crazy goth necromancer-witch can’t get you here. I took a few cleansing breaths and did a quick binding spell on the Hel’s Belles necklace—I would study it further the next day. For now, I was ready to go to sleep.

Booker had watched me carefully during all of this, his wolves having gone up to do a quick debrief with Nick and then retire to their respective apartments. He stayed to watch the binding after having inspected the rune himself again.

Once I was done, he gave me a long stare. “You’re not steady,” he began gruffly.

“I’m tired,” I retorted, not wanting to be soothed. I wasn’t steady. I was spooked. I was worried. So I didn’t argue when he walked me up to my apartment.

I did come close to arguing, though, when he came in the door with me.

“I’m just going to sleep on your couch tonight,” he said. “After the nightmare this morning, and the club tonight, I just want to make sure everything is okay here.”

“Everything” meaning me. Of course.

I wanted to be fierce and independent and tell him I’d be fine. Then I felt his aura, considered that strength. Remembered how I’d used it to keep me steady and anchored while we were in the club. Booker the Wolf’s presence comforted me, as strange as that might be. He was a little autocratic at times, but I could work around that. What had he said when he conceded to me earlier? I’ll adapt.

I could do that too. Within reason. And he did seem reasonable. Easy to talk to, most of the time. Considerate. Funny. Plus, he was a great hugger. A wielder of attractive dimples.

Besides, he was already living here. His apartment was on the sixth floor, and it was clearly meant to be not only his place but also a place for other wolves to stay as needed. He’d turned it into a dormlike place with four bedrooms and a large central area with copious seating in front of the television, right next to the kitchen, creating an eat-and-play area. He’d shown it to me a few days before, and his pleasure in it had been rather adorable.

However, I couldn’t help but notice his bedroom was right beneath mine. I wanted to file that away as a coincidence, but nothing this wolf did seemed accidental or random to me.

He’d be sleeping near enough to me anyway. What difference did one floor make?

I shrugged and got him a pillow and a blanket for the sofa. When he thanked me, showing his dimples, I flushed a little. I could feel it. “Well, good night,” I said. “If you’re hungry, there’s some food in the fridge. Help yourself.”

When I turned to escape into the bathroom, he did one of those werewolf-fast moves, and suddenly, he was beside me.
